Drafty windows can be quite a problem but before you even think of solving the problem, it is important to identify where exactly the real trouble is. If the draftiness of the windows stems from poor fixing, you might need to get a new window altogether.

There are methods like flashing and caulking that will usually help to create better results for drafty windows. Sometimes, the problem is a little more complex i.e. during fixing of the window there could have been an alteration of the window frame position and therefore calls for repositioning of the window.

The alteration can be tested by slowly moving a candle along the frame to find if wind finds its way through the joints between the house and the window frame. This is very common and a very effective method of testing. If the candle flame wavers, then there is an entry route for the wind and the window needs to be fixed.

You have to be careful not to set anything ablaze so the candle flame should be held carefully when doing this. In some cases, the window is fixed well but there may still some kind of wind making its way through. If this is happening then the problem could possibly be the window design and structure.

The wind might not really be making its way through at all but there could just be some kind of air exchange, depending on the nature of weather in your neighborhood. The window will therefore cool and resultantly cool the air within the room.

This air that has been cooled goes down and the warmer air rises, eventually getting cooled too. This calls for you to simply put in place a better functioning window.
