Decorating And Window Treatments

Beautiful Window Treatments

While brainstorming home decorating ideas for your home one of the biggest questions is, what to do with the windows. Each room has it’s challenges but probably the most challenging are tall floor to ceiling windows.

Two story windows are the most challenging for a few reasons. You want privacy, but also the view large windows offer. You want light, but also block the heat of the sun at certain times of the day. Big open windows can also make a room feel and look cold.

All these questions are answered a lot easier these days with all the blind and shade choices. What makes it even better is remote control blinds for all the high and hard to reach windows. When you want to block out the sun because of heat it’s a matter of using your trigger finger to close the blinds. When you want a view and light, just use the remote to make the blinds disappear.

Drapes add warmth color and texture to a room however, to cover these mammoth windows you see dollar signs add up with all the yardage of material it would take to cover them. I would suggest using blinds or shades for privacy and light issues and drape panels on each side of the window to add warmth, color and texture.

In most cases with two story windows it looks better to treat the whole window not just the bottom half. When treating the bottom of the window only, it takes away from the effect of the large window and the top half of the room seems empty.

Window treatments are a personal preference. Think about the needs for your rooms and select accordingly. Consider the appearance for not only the inside but the outside of your home as well.

We prefer blinds or shades over drapes for the simple look they offer to windows and rooms. For me it’s also an easy way to control light, have privacy and they are easy to care for. With all the selections from plantation shutters, shades, blinds and all the different materials used, it’s easy to find window treatments that fit any decor.

We live in an old two story colonial house. Most of our windows have white faux wood blinds with 2 ½ inch slats. We also have roman shades, bamboo shades, and faux plastic bamboo shades.

Each has it’s purpose for example the faux plastic shades on our screened porch add a great look, privacy, shade and they are easy to wipe down when dirty.

Something else to consider is outdoors looking in through the windows. From the front of our house each window has faux wood blinds. By keeping the windows consistent and uncluttered we are helping with our home’s curb appeal. Now you can add window treatments to your arsenal of home decorating ideas.
